General Manager & Director of Editorial
Diego Laje overseas editorial coverage and business operations for KBN. He hosts “Enfoque Asia,” the first feature show produced in Asia for Spanish speaking audiences and, a weekly series of reports on the Chinese-Latin American economic relationship.
During his journalism career, Diego has covered major breaking stories including the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, Japan’s tsunami and ensuing Fukushima nuclear disaster in 2011 ,and Typhoon Haiyan in 2013 for both English and Spanish CNN networks and affiliates.
A native of Argentina, he obtained a Master in Journalism from the University of Hong Kong, he is a graduate in Political Economy from St. Andrew’s University (Victoria, Argentina) and specialized in comparative media law at Oxford University. He was also distinguished as a visiting researcher on human trafficking by the Swedish Council, for his consistent coverage of this topic. He is writing his second book on China, covering China-Latin America business ties, due to be published in 2014.
Director of Production & New Media
Kevin Lau manages all aspects of production and media development for KBN. He is also a media producer, educator and culture junkie based out of Hong Kong. In addition he teaches new media and online journalism to undergraduate and graduate students in Hong Kong.
Over the years, Kevin has produced work for industry leading and innovative companies such as Ubisoft, Revision3, G4techTV, Iconoculture and DirecTV. At Ubisoft, Kevin produced and developed video game teasers and the “Developer diary” series for the AAA title Tom Clancy’s Endwar, garnering over 200,000 views.
During his time at Revision3, Kevin co-created the popular internet show “inDigital: Your Life in Gear”, a show about the newest in gadgets for technophiles. The show became the second highest viewed show averaging 80,000 downloads every release. As a veteran of the media industry, he is always dreaming of innovative techniques to balance creativity and plausibility.
A native of Los Angeles, California, he has a Master’s degree from the Hong Kong Polytechnic University in Multimedia and Entertainment.
Yuen Ying Chan
Director and Professor, Journalism and Media Studies Centre @ The University of Hong Kong
As an academic unit of HKU, the JMSC offers professional graduate and undergraduate degrees in journalism, and MPhil and PhD degrees.
She was also the founding dean (2003-2011) of the journalism school at Shantou University in China.
She is the co-Public Lead of Creative Commons Hong Kong, a board member of the Media Development Loan Fund, an investment fund for independent media worldwide and the chair of the World Economic Forum Global Agenda Council on Informed Societies.
Associate Professor of Practice, Journalism and Media Studies Centre @ The University of Hong Kong
Jeffrey Timmermans has more than a decade of experience in Asia as a financial and business journalist, having worked as a reporter in Tokyo for The Wall Street Journal and as a managing editor for Dow Jones Newswires in Hong Kong and Singapore.
In his most recent role at Dow Jones, he directed the regional corporate and equities news coverage produced by a team of more than 150 journalists, and helped develop the company’s in-house journalism training programme.
He also worked for Bain & Company, leading the global strategy consulting firm’s public-relations efforts in Asia.
He joined the Journalism & Media Studies Centre in 2008, and is currently studying for his Ph.D. in addition to teaching financial and business journalism. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Colgate University, and a Master of Science degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism.
